Group Psychotherapy is a wonderful way to explore several areas of life that are hard to get at in individual psychotherapy. In group, a person is challenged to consider how they relate to a variety of different persons. Further, a person gets feedback from other group members on these ways of relating. We all are shaped by our past. Group illuminates some of the ways a person has learned to interact with others and helps them practice new ways of interacting. Because group members don't have outside contact, the relationships have a level of safety not seen in personal relationships. This frees people to explore parts of themselves that may be inhibited in other places in their lives.
In my experience, group psychotherapy is at least as effective (if not more so in some cases) than individual therapy. The combination is generally superior to either. Right now, I have 2 ongoing groups. We are currently recruiting for an online group, but only for persons outside of the Triangle Area. The groups I run are co-ed and co-facilitated with a trusted colleague. All groups require a 6-month minimum commitment and have a weekly fee, regardless of attendance. Please look at the fees page for more info. Groups are 1.5 hours per week. For more information about group psychotherapy in general, click here, and for more information about my groups, see below:
Weekly Interpersonal Process Groups
Location: 2 Local NC Groups that are currently back to meeting in person; both are ongoing groups with 1 year commitment
Cost: $100.00 per group for NC groups (in-person), $165.00 for DC/NoVa clients (tele-health platform) -- both are weekly fees.
Description of group:
We start with the premise that our relationships are critically important to our emotional wellbeing. Therefore, it is a central goal of therapy to address issues surrounding these relationships, whether romantic, professional, or with friends or family. Oftentimes, we have difficulty finding relationships that feel rewarding or we may have difficulty finding relationships at all. Sometimes even if we can find suitable connections, it can be hard to allow ourselves to feel close and safe with others. Perhaps our relationships are burdensome, or filled with conflict or with distance, for reasons that are hard to change or our outside of our awareness.
The power of group therapy is to have a safe space to explore with others how we experience relationships. From there, we are empowered to try new ways of being in relationship with others.
The first place we learn to relate is in our childhood families. Some of those ways we learn to relate work well in our adult life. Other ways cause unnecessary problems. In group therapy, where members are not tied to one another outside of group, there’s an opportunity to give and receive honest feedback. Doing this allows us to learn how to create deeper and more authentic and connected relationships outside of group.
Group therapy is often an accelerated path to therapy results, as feedback is provided not just by a therapist but by multiple people with multiple points of view. This can give you a more comprehensive, nuanced picture of how you are viewed by others, and how to better connect with and relate to people in your life. U

- we offer a moderate sliding scale, for those who would like to do group but cannot afford the full weekly rate.
