ABOUT

My work is influenced by Humanistic, Existential, and Contemporary Psychodynamic Theories. What all these approaches have in common is an emphasis on relationships and all are considered "relational therapies". I see relationships, including the therapy relationship, as central to how we understand and navigate our world and how we gain meaning. Therefore, I'm not a remote observer in the room. Instead, I am active and accessible. Clients often say they can tell that I actually care about them (which is true) and that I don't seem cold or removed (also true). We (client and I) look at the past and present to gather information. With the information we gather, we then use the relationship we have in therapy to work on problems and identify strengths.
Recent research shows that relational therapy, which is a “psychodynamic” treatment, is helpful for a wide range of issues including symptom reduction and increased quality of life.
My Skill and Training
I am an active member of a training academy, The American Academy of Psychotherapists (AAP), which is dedicated to enhancing both the skill and person of the therapist. Members meet twice a year to sharpen and expand their skill set in both individual and group psychotherapies. AAP requires a therapist to have had at least 2 years of their own personal psychotherapy (100 hours), have several current member recommendations, and to be voted on by the current membership to join.
I make sure to do at least the equivalent amount of training in newer, more specific therapies. I take part in a monthly Dialectical Behavior Therapy Training and Consultation Group and am a member of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (the parent organization for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
Other Therapies I Use
I have found that most people generally require concrete coping skills to move towards increased levels of acceptance and also to make necessary changes.
I am trained in the newer Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. These therapies show great promise in helping people learn specific strategies to improve their coping abilities. In particular, I work from two of these therapies:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
